Three Peakes yacht Race : Predator withdraws due an equipment failure

Three Peakes yacht Race : Predator withdraws due an equipment failure

As the race moves into its 4th day all but two of the teams have left Whitehaven and there has been further retirement overnight. This was the withdrawal of Predator due an equipment failure (they didnt say what), who are now heading back home to Wales. The two teams still in Whitehaven with runners on the mountain stage, are Flemish Lowlanders, the Belgian team, and Kasuju the leaking boat. The two Belgian runners set off last night at 22.13, so may have had to go up Scafell Pike in the dark, however this is a very relaxed team so it wouldnt surprise me if they chose to rest and wait for some light. They do have a support crew of two here, so theyll be met at Wasdale Head, and since the support crew have been seen drinking red wine at 10.00am at the foot of Snowdon and one of the races has a large JB Whiskey panel on his bike frame, its not unlikely they will stop at the Wasdale Inn! (This used to be a common occurrence in the past, when teams were more amateur and one year there was even a special Tilman Trophy when drinking a pint at the Inn won teams extra points!) The leading 3 boats are still a tide ahead and in the same race position, with Danu Technologies staying ahead of White Clouds and then Team Whistler. At present (09.00 Tuesday) they are in the Sound of Jura, which notorious for becalming boats and forcing them to row, and there are several tidal gates ahead for them to negotiate as they make their way through the Inner Hebrides up to Fort William. It is hard to predict but a finish tonight is likely, and with the runners from the leading two evenly matched, there be a repeat of last year when the runners decided the race on final Ben Nevis run.Event media Last Updated ( Tuesday, 28 June 2011 )

Velux 5 Oceans : News from Le Pingouin days before the race begins

Greetings! It has been a long haul since we launched the Team Lazarus effort in October 2009. I have to say it feels like a lot has happened in just 12 months, from scoping out appropriate race boats, to acquiring one, assembling a small but stellar shore based team, bringing the boat to Charleston on a marathon winter delivery, conducting a complete refit to make her race ready, sailing back across the Atlantic to France and now sitting a mere five days from the start of the VELUX 5 OCEANS solo race around the world. That litany of accomplishments only touches the surface, as behind the scenes we have also been on a extensive yet challenging search for sponsorship and planning the logistics of the next 9 months. Here I sit, in La Rochelle France, about to begin an epic race solo around the globe, and the only reason I am here is because of the team that surrounds me, which includes friends, family, sailors, armchair sailors, adventure enthusiasts, patriots, the marine industry, Charlestons robust support network, and many others. Please note the important sponsors at left and support them often, as they have been a big part of making this race happen. Thank you to all those who have helped make this dream a reality and please keep up with the race as there are dozens of outlets to entertain you with the races marketing machine well in place and video, photos and stories coming out non-stop over the next 9 months. Cheers, Brad See Velux 5 Oceans images: THE MILEAGE MARATHON Ive been pretty candid about how difficult it has been to find the sponsorship funding necessary to compete in this race. The reality is, that we will need to continue our outreach for support throughout the entire event. Thankfully, there are both individuals and companies willing to get creative. Noel Sterrett has generously offered to support the campaign not through a cash contribution, but with 100,000 miles. Airfares are a large portion of the budget, with the need to transport the shore team and family to multiple international locations. Without a pit crew the boat wont be ready to race, and without my family... well, the race just wouldnt happen. Thanks Noel for your generosity and starting the mileage marathon. Are you sitting on miles that will expire or more than you could ever use? This is a creative way to support the team. It is rather easy to assign them to others and make a huge dent in our travel budget. Plus we will reward you with some cool team gear! Please email mvanliew@oceanracing.org if you would like to participate or have questions about how it works, or text a message to +1 843 814-3966. LE PINGOUIN - WHATS IN THE NAME AND WHY? We were getting close to the end of refitting the race boat and the inevitable questions started flying about name, color, and graphics. We had pitched dozens of companies on the Title Sponsor position with ample room for massive, vivid graphics. Id love to show you some of the incredible mock-ups we did with the help of graphically talented friends, but wed probably get slapped with a lawsuit and I cant really deal with that at sea. Lets just say there were some incredible opportunities to be had. Lacking a Title/Naming Sponsor in hand, we eventually decided it would be better to blast the hull with some bright color and eye-catching graphics, as opposed to a white hull and sponsor wanted. At one point Nitro (shore crew) almost convinced me to name it ME! with the big, fierce cougar from the Talladega Nights/The Ballad of Ricky Bobby movie. Instead, we decided to go with a tribute to the origins of the boat, when she was built under the direction of French sailing legend Catherine Chabaud to compete in the Vendee Globe event. Catherine visited us on the docks here in France yesterday and explained why she had registered the boat as Le Pingouin, a name that has never been changed with officials despite the many corporate brands that have stretched across the hull. A designer from the famous sports magazine in France, LEquipe, proposed a theory that penguins would line the edges of icy Antarctica and watch as the skippers sailed around the vast Southern Ocean. Catherine ran with it and the same designer created a cute little penguin graphic for the transom of her boat. The penguin has since been updated with a touch of my personality and my determination to race well. Thanks to Cre843 for your talent in design. Last Updated ( Tuesday, 12 October 2010 )

Netherlands. Heesen Yachts signs new contract with Frans Heesen

Heesen Yachts is proud to announce the signing of a new contract for a 47-metre displacement motor-yacht, Hull Number 15747, for delivery in 2012. This new building contract is even more special for the Company since the client is Frans Heesen, former owner and founder of the shipyard who comments: I am delighted to start the new year by announcing the contract for my own new boat, which my wife and I signed some days ago! I am planning to spend many joyful days with my family and numerous grandchildren aboard this beautiful 47-metre. This is the second yacht under construction for Frans after the 4400-series, My Petra, which was delivered to him in June 2009. YN 15747 is the eighth yacht in Heesens highly successful 47-metre full-displacement series and, as such, is the sister-ship to YN 14347, M/Y Blind Date (2009); the award winning YN 14047, M/Y Elandess (2008); YN 13547, M/Y Mon Plaisir (2007); YN 13147, M/Y Let it Be (2006); and YN 12247, M/Y Yalla (2004). She is also the sister-ship of the two hulls currently under construction: YN 15147 scheduled for delivery in 2010, and YN 15347 scheduled for delivery in 2011. The sale of this new vessel means that four new contracts were signed in the last 12 months by Heesen Yachts, and brings the number of vessels currently in construction at this premier Dutch shipyard to the amazing total of 13, figures which confirm the strength and financial reliability of this world-renowned company. Delivery is scheduled for 2012.See Heesen Yacht images: Last Updated ( Monday, 01 February 2010 )

Norway & China. Official opening of Kongsberg Maritime sensor factory in China

Kongsberg Maritime China Jiangsu (KMCJ), an advanced new 2880m2 sensor production facility located in the Norwegian Industrial Park in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province, China, was officially opened on Monday 30th November 2009 during a traditional Chinese ceremony attended by over 150 guests. Work started on the modern new sensor production facility, which is based on the same methodology and processes used at Kongsberg Maritimes Trondheim, Norway, sensor production facility, in February 2009. The establishment of KMCJ was an international effort, involving a number of people from different departments, from our sensor production facility in Trondheim and other Kongsberg Maritime sites, comments Hvard Johnsen, General Manager, KMCJ. We currently have 15 employees, all of whom were hand-picked for their positions. As a high-tech, international technology company we are dedicated to bringing only the best people onboard and although most key personnel are now in place, the headcount at KMCJ will continue to grow, says Johnsen The considerable investment in the new facility will support Kongsberg Maritimes position as a leading developer of sophisticated sensors for marine and offshore applications such as engine monitoring, bearing wear and tank monitoring, in addition to ensuring local capability to service the significant marine sensors market in the region. Far East Asia engine manufacturers constitute a large portion of the potential market for the standard sensors produced by Kongsberg Maritime, whilst we have also identified a direct requirement from shipyards for the delivery of our sensor products, says Andreas Jagtyen, Vice President of Kongsberg Maritimes Merchant Marine sensor division in Trondheim (MM-T). The sensor production lines set up at KMCJ are intended for larger volumes and mass production for these customers, while in Trondheim, we will take care of customer specific sensors, spare parts and European orders, continues Jagtyen. The KMCJ production facility also features a state-of-the-art mechanical workshop, with a range of advanced CNC-machining centres, and other workshop machinery for production of sensor parts and other mechanical components. This will ensure the continued quality and reliability of Kongsberg Maritime sensor products in addition to enabling a competitive market offering. To ensure the right product quality and to meet the market price, it was necessary to in-source and take control over the mechanical production of our sensors, explains Oddbjrn Malmo, Production Manager at MM-T. The new KMCJ building is part of a larger project to establish a significant KONGSBERG presence in Zhenjiang, following the purchase of 55,000m2 of land in the area. Over 30,000m2 of modern production facilities are scheduled to be in place by 2012, representing Kongsberg Maritimes largest production operation outside of Norway. Rolex Miami OCR: US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics collects Gold, Silver and Bronze

On the final day of racing at US SAILINGs Rolex Miami OCR, US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) collected three medals. Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) won gold in Laser Radial, and in Womens Match Racing, Team Tunnicliffe Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.), Molly Vandemoer (Redwood City, Calif.) and Debbie Capozzi (Bayport, N.Y.) and Team Barkow Sally Barkow (Nashotah, Wis.), Alana OReilly (Charleston, S.C.) and Elizabeth Kratzig-Burnham (Miami, Fla.) won silver and bronze, respectively. This event is the second stop on the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Cup circuit. Wrapping up the gold medal going into todays Laser Radial medal race, Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) only had to sail the race and finish. My main goal was not to get any OCS (a penalty for starting early) or yellow flags, she explained. I definitely sailed my boat conservatively. The tactics still come through. I was able to sail some good upwind legs especially the second one, and thats where I made some big gains. Still, it was pretty cool seeing everyone else. It was intense and great to see everyone else going at it really hard. In the Elliott 6m (Womens Match Racing) first-to-three final match for gold and silver medals, Team Tunnicliffe Anna Tunnicliffe, Molly Vandemoer and Debbie Capozzi (Bayport, N.Y.) was defeated by Frances Claire Leroy, Elodie Bertrand and Marie Riou, 3-1. Team Tunnicliffe took home the silver medal. In the petit-final, Team Barkow -- Sally Barkow (Nashotah, Wis.), Alana OReilly (Charleston, S.C.) and Elizabeth Kratzig (Miami, Fla.) defeated GBRs Team Macgregor Lucy Macgregor, Mary Rook and Kate Macgregor, 2-1. Team Barkow won a bronze medal for their win. The final 49er (High Performance Dinghy) medal race was full of excitement for Erik Storck (Huntington, N.Y.) and Trevor Moore (North Pomfret, Vt.), who took charge of the race from the start and finished in second. That result moved them up into 5th place overall for the event. Up-and-coming 49er sailors Alex Bishop (Baltimore, Md.) and Val Smith (Wilmette, Ill.), members of the US Sailing Development Team, did a good job and finished in 6th overall. With this weeks result, they qualified for the 2011 USSTAG. The medal race in the Finn (Mens One Person Dinghy Heavy) was a close race for Zach Railey (Clearwater, Fla.), who went into today aiming for a top-five result. It wasnt to be as he finished the medal race in sixth for sixth place overall this week. Stuart McNay (Boston, Mass) and Graham Biehl (San Diego, Calif.) ended their run in the Mens 470 in sixth place overall. Although Brian Fatih (Miami, Fla.) sat out todays medal race due to an injury sustained yesterday, Star skipper Mark Mendelblatt (Miami, Fla.) recruited USSTAG Star crew Brad Nichol (Miami Beach, Fla.) as a substitute crew, and the duo finished second to move up into 5th overall for the regatta. Fatih will return to competition soon. Andrew Campbell(San Diego, Calif.) and Ian Coleman (Annapolis, Md.) had a great medal race, finishing fifth for 6th overall in the regatta. Rounding out the top ten were George Szabo (San Diego, Calif.) and Frithjof Kleen (Berlin, GER) in 7th and Andy Horton (S.Burlington, Vt.) and James Lyne (Granville, Vt.) in 10th. Two USSTAG athletes competed in the Laser medal race: Clay Johnson (Toms River, N.J.) and Rob Crane (Darien, Conn.), who finished 9th and 10th, respectively. Golden Torch Award US SAILINGs Golden Torch Trophy, awarded to the U.S. sailor with the best overall performance at US SAILINGs Rolex Miami OCR, this year went to Laser Radial Gold Medalist Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.). The torch, from the 1980 Moscow Olympics, was presented by the Russian Olympic Committee to Andrew Kostanecki, chairman of the United States Olympic Sailing Committee from 1985 to 1988. Kostanecki gave the torch to US SAILING as an award for aspiring Olympians and Paralympians. Railey also received the award last year. Competition in the three Paralympic classes concluded on Friday, January 28. Top American in the 2.4mR class was John Ruf (Pewaukee, Wis.), finished 6th overall. Mark LeBlanc (New Orleans, La.) was in 18th and Charles Rosenfield (Woodstock, Conn.) 19th. Rick Doerr (Clifton, N.J.), Brad Kendell (Tampa, Fla.) and Hugh Freund (South Freeport, Me.) were the top Americans in the Sonar (Open Three Person Keelboat) class, finished in 4th overall. Albert Foster (Wayzata, Minn.), Michael Hersey (Hyannis, Mass.) and David Burdette (Lutherville, Md.) in 7th overall, and Paul Callahan (Cape Coral, Fla./Newport R.I.), Tom Brown (Castine, Me.) and Bradley Johnson (Pompano Beach, Fla.) finished in 8th.. Scott Whitman and Julia Dorsett won a silver medal in the SKUD-18; Jen French (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Jean-Paul Creignou (St. Petersburg, Fla.) finished 4th overall; and Sarah Everhart Skeels (Tiverton, R.I.) and Bob Jones (Issaquah, Wash.) were 6th. This evening is the Rolex prizegiving at Coral Reef Yacht Club where medals will be presented in 10 Olympic and three Paralympic sailing classes. Over 700 of the worlds top athletes from 53 countries competed. Audi MedCup : Wieder Quantum Racing vorn

Audi MedCup : Wieder Quantum Racing vorn

Juni). Ergebnisse des Audi MedCup Circuit Marseille Trophy (14. 19. Juni) Mittwoch, 15. Juni TP 52 1. Wettfahrt: 1. Audi Azzurra Sailing Team (Italien), 2. Audi MedCup :Bergfest in Cagliari

Juli). Deutsche TP 52 Container mit Skipper Markus Wieser nach Sieg in Marseille diesmal auch Gejagte. Jochen Schmann will Aufwrtstrend des Audi Sailing Team powered by All4One fortsetzen. Wir nehmen eben was kommt. Barcelona World Race: Boris Herrmann: Wir agieren bisher auch etwas unglucklich.

Barcelona World Race: Boris Herrmann: Wir agieren bisher auch etwas unglucklich.

Zwischenstand beim Barcelona World Race am Dienstagnachmittag (25. Januar): 1. Virbac-Paprec 3: Jean-Pierre Dick / Lock Peyron (beide Frankreich) 2. Knickerbocker Cup: Anna Tunniciffe reports on a Learning Day

Today was a great day of sailing and we learned a lot of lessons. We sailed 6 races today, winning three of them and leaving us with a 7-4 record for the first round robin. The round is still going on, and will be completed after six more flights. We have a pretty good record, but we will have to see tomorrow where we lie overall. The next round is for the top eight boats, which will race a round robin. Todays conditions were shifty and puffy with occasional rain showers that came through. We raced in winds from 6-10kts with big oscillations. Unfortunately we kept making the same silly mistake on the start line, which made our day quite difficult, but we did end up winning three races, which gives us a good record going into tomorrow. We drew a lot of penalties on the other boats, which helped us out a bit when we were behind off the line, but we learned what we did wrong and can hopefully fix the problem for tomorrow. The forecast for tomorrow is for the remnants of Danny to come over and give us some wind and rain and then get better through the day. We are sitting out for the first part of tomorrow so we get the opportunity to relax in the morning and watch some racing before we get back at it. UK. Maritime & Coastguard Agency welcomes National Audit Office report

The publication from the National Audit Office (NAO) of its Report into the growth of the UK merchant fleet, and the Maritime Coastguard Agencys (MCA) response to that significant increase, was welcomed this morning by the Agencys Chief Executive, Peter Cardy. He said, overall, the Report had identified the Agencys achievement in supporting the growth of the merchant fleet without significant extra resources, an efficient use of taxpayers money. He also welcomed the NAOs Report as adding to the evidence that the Agency had succeeded in the task set ten years ago by Government in the maritime plan Charting A New Course, and how the United Kingdom Ship Register (UKSR) was now much improved. The Report focuses on how the MCA has responded to the Government drive to increase the growth in UK registered merchant shipping fleet whilst continuing to assure the quality of the UK flag. The NAO also found that, as the size of the fleet increased, the Agency used staff resources more efficiently, and that it had maintained the quality of the UK flag in terms of the accident rate for UK merchant ships and the proportion of UK ships detained overseas. Among other strengths the Report found that The Agencys survey and inspection work has increased 33% between 1999/2000 (2,683) and 2007/2008 (3,902). Because over half the UK fleet did not visit a UK port in 2007 marine surveyors inspected around 450 UK flagged vessels abroad. Growth of the UK merchant fleet has also led to an increase in the number of certificates issued to seafaring officers from 6,400 in 2003/2004 to 7,700 in 2007/2008. Peter Cardy said Rightly, the NAO Report also drew our attention to increased workloads and surveyor shortages which will mean that the Agency needs to improve its planning of work and resources. We missed some of our targets for inspections of UK and foreign ships for the first time in 2007-08 and will do so again in 2008-09. This is a direct result of the difficulties in finding and retaining the people with the right skills and the competition for experienced maritime surveyors. We have plans to improve our recruitment. Mr Cardy concluded In difficult and challenging economic times, the Agency, like many other organisations, will find it difficult to make long term predictions and plans. Our aim will be to remain flexible and adaptable to changes in the shipping industry, while still leading globally in customer focus and service. Last Updated ( Wednesday, 11 February 2009 )

OSCAR: Jan Kees Lampe Open 40 La Promesse on the water leader

OSCAR: Jan Kees Lampe Open 40 La Promesse on the water leader

Tuesday morning and this is King of Shaves reporting. It is still windy, still wavy, still wet and we are still flying along. I have been in throttle back mode all night as I had had a great 36 hour run and with the wind on the beam and the waves pretty massive I wanted to give Anthony a break and make sure that I didnt blow it all up and spin out on a corner after having got myself right up there in the race. It was always going to be that I lost ground while we were beating at the start, would make some up while we were reaching (if that ever came along which thankfully it did in a BIG way!) and, then, assuming we are in the race at the Grand Banks, then the results will be decided on the 800 miles down the coast. I got the positions from 8am and I am really happy with my position, I am further west than all but 4 bigger boats so that cant be bad. I may be a bit too far north but right now you can only sail where the waves allow and this is the angle I need to sail. Flying along though, still surfing at 14 knots regularly even with only a double reefed main up. I spent a lot of time down below overnight, was up and down to check sail plan / wind and waves but I had a good night with the boat, I have sailed her enough to know a bit about what she is telling me and I have an agreement with Anthony about how hard he can be pushed and when its too much he lets me know and I re-balance the boat to take some strain off him. So far so good on all those fronts. I will put the 4 back up now and as the breeze is supposed to drop I will increase sail all day it seems. Mind you, the GRIB weather files are AWLWAYS 5 to 8 knots under reading so maybe not!!! Nobody said anythung about 45 knots on the first night!!!!!!!!!!! Breakfast of oats and fruit today, so off to eat some yummy foodits funny how out here very plain food tastes awesome. Mind you the view is spectacular Cheers, Osc Tuesday 2nd June 2009 : 11:00 Off the wall: Once you get into website updating your mind is constantly whirring with ideas for titles stories and new themes. Today my mind is racing and I cant settle down to choose a particular theme for a story. So here are some of my random thoughts. Katie Heads for the Sun! Katie what were you doing at 0400 this morning going 15.8 knots on a heading of 191? Having been a J24 sailor for 15 years I can make an educated guess. Youve got the kite up, the wind has increased and youve neglected to take it down. A three quarter reach is the only safe direction to go in. Come up and you broach Go down and in big waves you risk a wipe out. Went fishing Yesterday evening I went fly fishing for sea trout in the dark on the river Tamar. It was magic to get away from the computer screen and out into the unspoilt countryside. There was a beautiful half moon and I forgot about OSTAR for a whole 6 hours! When I got home at 0100 I couldnt resist checking the latest tracker data to see how you are all getting on. What a sad case! OSCARs position At 0830 today Oscar Meads position (King of Shaves) was reported as being N4757 W3337. This would put him in about 6th or 7th place overall on distance to go and leading the Gypsy Moth Class on the water. It also makes him one of the most northerly boats in the leading pack. Some trackers miss one or two reports which is probably due to sail configuration blocking the signal. Oscars tracker however seems to have failed altogether. So keep the position reports coming Oscar and well keep everyone posted. OSTAR GOES GLOBAL We Googled OSTAR this morning and discovered that our articles, complete with spelling mistakes, are being copied all around the world from Europe to the States and even to Australia. So keep it up guys you are World News! WHY NO SPONSOR? With all that publicity, 2 page spreads in the Telegraph, 4 pages in Yachting Monthly, constant coverage on BBC Spotlight, Worldwide coverage on sailing websites, I think some PR executives in major companies have missed a wonderful opportunity to promote their company names and profiles. I would love to print a list of those that turned us down. We could still do with some extra funding so if anyone wants to jump aboard for the final weeks of the race and the finish in Newport email us at ostar@rwyc.org WHO IS WINNING? The leader on the water is Jan Kees Lampe sailing the Open 40 La Promesse. Chasing him hard and catching up overnight is Rob Craigie in Jbellino a J122 which has been revelling in the downwind conditions and has taken over the lead of IRC 1 on handicap. IRC 2s positions are more difficult because King of Shaves tracker is not working. From our data Fanfan is the leader with Dinah and Vijaya in second and third; but King of Shaves is leading on the water and is probably leading on handicap as well. In IRC 3 the leading boat on the water is Dick Koopmans (Jager) but on handicap the veteran OSTAR sailor Mervyn Wheatley is leading. You dont hear much from Mervyn during the race; but while the youngsters are dashing about all over the place in their surfing dishes., Mervyn gets Tamarind up to hull speed, sets his wind vane to sail down the shortest route to Newport and relaxes with a large sherry at 1800. He wont be flying a kite in these downwind conditions because he deliberately left it at home; but he is clearly not loosing out. In second place on handicap is Marco Nannini on British Beagle. In IRC 4 the flying Sigma 33 of Will Sayer (Elmarleen) is leading on both the water and on handicap. This is a remarkable achievement for what many people might consider to be a round the cans club cruiser/racer. In second place is Christian Chalandre (Olbia) and third Michael Collins (Flamingo Lady). OVERALL HANDICAP POSITIONS Based on the Blogstar calculations the leader on handicap at the moment is Will Sayer (Elmarleen), in second Rob Craigie (Jbellino) and third Mervyn Wheatley (Tamarind). This is unofficial and I doubt it includes accurate information on King of Shaves. Marten Holden Race Office See OSTAR images: Last Updated ( Tuesday, 02 June 2009 )

UK. Videotel training series addresses risked posed by dangerous bulk cargoes

Dangerous solid bulk cargoes which have the potential to sink a ship are the focus of both new legislation and a new training package from leading maritime training expert Videotel. On January 1st 2011 the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code - the IMSBC Code - officially comes in force. The IMSBC Code is mandatory under the provisions of the SOLAS Convention and supersedes the Code of Safe Working Practice for Bulk Cargoes (BC Code). The Code details how to handle some 150 different types of cargo and to assess their suitability for carriage. It also presents additional information including the Code of Safe Working Practice for the Loading and Unloading of Bulk Carriers (BLU Code) and makes recommendations on the safe use of pesticides in ships, applicable to the fumigation of cargo holds. Many solid bulk cargoes have serious risks associated with them that can affect ship stability, cause structural damage or pose health hazards to those on board. Videotels Dangerous Difficult Cargoes series addresses this potentially life-threatening issue. Part 1 - Dangerous Difficult Bulk Cargoes: Best Practice the IMSBC Code - has already been released, while Dangerous Difficult Bulk Cargoes Part 2 - Minerals Man Made Derivatives will be released this spring. The first programme details the IMSBC code, outlines best practices and highlights the group system used to identify cargoes: (Group A -cargo that may liquefy and therefore cause stability issues; Group B - cargo that may chemically change to cause explosion or toxic gas; Group C-cargoes not liable to liquefy or cause chemical hazard). Dangerous Difficult Bulk Cargoes Part 2 outlines the catastrophic failures which can occur to the structural soundness of even the largest bulk carriers when corrosive chemical reactions take place in hazardous cargoes and identifies effective risk-management strategies. Stephen Bond, Deputy Chairman of Videotel, says: There have been a number of serious accidents in recent years, some involving loss of life, caused by dangerous cargoes. Identification of cargo and an understanding of its properties are key to preventing such accidents. We are pleased to be able to make this vital training series which aims to avoid further fatalities. Videotel has been fortunate to have a number of leading world experts involved in the production of this important training series including Roger Holt of Holt Maritime Ltd, Rob Lomas and Ian Harrison from Intercargo. Roger Holt says: In light of the recent tragic loss of life surrounding a number of shipments of bulk cargoes with high moisture content, the timing of this important training video could not have been better. In my opinion, every bulk carrier should have a copy on board and every crew member in a position of authority vis a vis the carriage of bulk cargoes should be required to mark, learn and inwardly digest its contents. I congratulate Videotel on the production of an excellent training product which underlines the importance of the work carried out by the IMO with the coming into force of the IMSBC Code.
